‘Cheap Sex’ Reunite for a One-Time Show

After breaking up 5 1/2 years ago, Cheap Sex reunited for a one-time show last Friday night at The Observatory in Santa Ana. Along with Lower Class Brats, Channel 3, The Scarred, and Media Blitz, this punk rock show proved that punk rock never dies. All members of Cheap Sex live scattered across the US, yet they still united together for one night to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of their first album release, Launch Off to War. Having toured with Lower Class Brats and Channel 3 before, this show felt like nostalgia to many fans. As an all-ages show, many teenagers showed up, much to the dismay of older fans because of their mostly immature attitudes. However, that did not stop me from enjoying quite possibly the last time seeing Cheap Sex live.

Media Blitz opened the night with their brief set. Playing a very hardcore set, they sounded more screamo than the rest of the bands. Surprisingly, they even covered the Dead Kennedys’ “California Über Alles” during their set. Overall, they did a decent job getting the energy flowing in the room, but their constant screaming did not motivate anyone to start in the pit.

The Scarred followed up in the night. Although I have never heard of them, the crowd seemed to favor The Scarred, as a pit erupted immediately when the band took to the stage. Sounding truer to punk rock than the previous band, the energy level in the room rose tremendously with their presence. I hope to see more of them again soon.

Up next, Channel 3 took their turn on stage. These dudes do not let age drag them down. With as much energy and enthusiasm as any so-called young garage band and a fan base to match, Channel 3 delivered nonstop punk rock throughout their set, not even hesitating to give the crowd a chance to breathe.

My personal headliner, Lower Class Brats entered the stage to a wild ovation. Despite opening to a headliner, their set felt like a headlining act. Lower Class Brats know how to put on a show, evident by their seamless transitions between songs, crowd engagement, performance variations, song choice, and more. If not for Cheap Sex playing afterwards, I would have come to this show only for Lower Class Brats.

Once Lower Class Brats had finished their set, setup for Cheap Sex began with the guys sound-checking their own equipment. Typically bands have roadies to deal with that, but for Cheap Sex’s situation, they had no roadies to do so, so they took care of it all themselves. During the sound check, they asked if it sounded good, and upon receiving a confirmation, they immediately began playing, much to everyone’s surprise. The hardcore punk action raged on the rest of the night, as Cheap Sex played only their hardest toughest songs. Pits erupted throughout the entire room in addition to the main center pit, so anyone wanting to escape could not avoid taking a few hits. The intense action culminated into a final farewell following their last song, as everyone knew they may not ever see Cheap Sex live again.

This free monthly event takes place over many blocks in Downtown Los Angeles. Many galleries will open late, and some parking lots will contain more art, vendors, food trucks, entertainment, and more. Unless you know business owners, free parking does not exist in Downtown LA, although some meters only operate until 8pm. First-time visitors should attend with someone who has gone here before.
