San Diego International Beer Festival 2018

The San Diego County Fair will import hundreds of beers from around the world for a weekend of beer at the fairgrounds. Over the weekend, the fairgrounds will host five different four-hour sessions of unlimited tastings, and each session will feature different seminars and presentations. General admission starts at $55 and includes admission to the rest of the fair plus the souvenir cup. Parking on-site costs $10, while off-site parking with shuttles costs nothing. Although the beer fest takes place in the arena under a roof, the rest of the fair takes place outdoors, so prepare for sunny weather if you choose to venture outside. I highly recommend arriving as early as possible, as each session tends to run out of beer an hour before a session ends.

The 2nd Annual Latin Salsa Festival took place this past weekend in Pershing Square in Downtown Los Angeles. Free to attend for all ages, this event contained dozens of food vendors all selling their Latin-inspired foods to visitors. In addition, a music stage housed a handful of bands and musicians all playing Latin dance music. Nothing else out of the ordinary occurred – you just have a weekend of food vendors and live music. Southern California has gone through a heat wave recently, and on this weekend, the weather went well over 100 degrees, making for a hot event in more ways than one. Despite that, this event still managed to attract hundreds of visitors over the weekend. I anticipate that this event will return again next year, so keep an eye out for it in early July next year when it will return.

Ever participate in a flash mob? No, not the kind of flash mob where everyone breaks out in dance. I speak of the infamous pillow fight flash mob. World Pillow Fight Day takes place every year on the first Saturday of April, where communities around the world gather to unleash a fray of feather-fueled frenzy on unsuspecting combatants. Due to the unorganized nature of a flash mob, no one can control what occurs, so anyone can join in, yet anything goes. One will encounter solo pillow fighters, pillow fighter parties, and specific pillow fighter “targets” dressed in costume. Throughout the melee, someone may call out a target, prompting anyone nearby to all focus on that particular pillow fighter. While many people brought cotton pillows, the few that brought feather pillows made the pillow fight much more interesting. Of course, this also caused some breathing issues as the air filled with dust and feathers. Regardless, everyone had a great time, and despite the location, the event did not see any troublemakers.

For best results, participants should use feather pillows instead of cotton or memory foam pillows, and make a few perforations on the pillows to allow the feathers to fly. Participants should maintain their health by wearing goggles, bandanas, masks, or anything else to help preserve vision and breathing.

Note that most locations take place in dense areas, so prepare to pay for parking. Check the website for confirmed locations throughout the world. As far as Southern California goes, World Pillow Fight Day returns to Los Angeles after taking many years off, with the last one taking place in 2011.

The color run that started it all returns to San Diego this Sunday morning. This fun run takes the racing out of a 5k or 10k, and places participants in a running course where they will get showered with bright colors. All runners should wear white for this run, as they run through the course and absorb all the colors flying through the air. Registration for this color run costs $50 per solo participant, or $45 per person if registering as a team of four or more. Waves of runners will start at 9am and launch every few minutes following that for up to two hours, so do not fret about getting there on time.
