Christmas
December 25
Worldwide

Spend the holidays with your friends & family, and remember to have fun and stay safe.

The Downtown Pomona Christmas Parade made its annual return this past Saturday night. At this free all-ages event, dozens of businesses and organizations hosted floats or marching groups in a parade for the holidays. This parade allows locals to recognize the prominent figures of the region, including the Grand Marshal, Larry Wilmore, perhaps known best for The Nightly Show. Originally scheduled to run from 6pm to 8pm, the parade began at the origin at 6pm, while the last group of the parade reached the end at 9pm; thus, the parade technically lasted two hours for those remaining in one location during the entire parade. Although chilly for most of the night, it never got to the point that the weather felt freezing cold, so this made spectating the parade more bearable than expected for a cold December night. This parade marks one of the many Christmas parades across the country, with many more in the approaching week or two. Until then, plenty of other Christmas parades will take place for your enjoyment. In the meantime, enjoy these pictures I took at the Downtown Pomona Christmas Parade last Saturday night.

Southern California has such a diverse culture that appreciates many different things. Nowhere else does this diversity appear more in than within the cuisine here. Southern California houses so many different types of food that keeping track of them all turns into a job rather than a chore. Luckily, Southern California has food events, such as Artisanal LA, that allow visitors to experience what Southern California has to offer to your curious tastebuds. For something completely different this time, Artisanal LA teamed up with Arcadia to transform their trademark designer food expo into a one-of-a-kind street fair. At this free and all-ages event, visitors to this European market-inspired local shopping experience encountered the latest trends in food, drinks, fashion, accessories, and more. Whereas the official Artisanal LA features dozens of artists, chefs, bakers, designers, and more from across the world, this small event only had a few dozen set up what appeared to outsiders as a farmer’s market. Unlike a farmer’s market, this event did not have fresh produce, but it did have fresh goods!

Artisanal LA conducts a semiannual show at The Reef in South Central Los Angeles, bringing along with it a slew of local designer goods for our eyes and mouths. At Artisanal LA, this two-day all-ages event allows visitors to stroll through the numerous aisles filled with local artisanal vendors, where visitors can sample products, purchase products, or receive information about services for future business. At select times during the weekend, seminars would take place, where visitors can sit down to listen and watch demos or learn about things. Around every corner, most products sold consist of snacks, especially jerky, or dessert, such as cookies, cupcakes, candy, and more. I would anticipate that anyone arriving without a sweet tooth may feel left out of the many vendors present. Check out Artisanal LA semiannually around April and October, and keep up with their news on their Facebook and Twitter pages.

Manhattan Beach Holiday Fireworks
5:00 pm – 10:00 pm, December 11
Manhattan Beach Pier, Manhattan Beach
http://mbfireworks.com/

This Sunday night, many streets near the Manhattan Beach Pier will close, as thousands of spectators gather to watch fireworks (which start at 7pm), dance, drink, mingle, and more. Completely free to attend, expect chaos with this many people. Arrive early to snag a good parking spot.

The 34th Annual Belmont Shore Christmas Parade returns this Saturday night. This wondrous treat for locals allows the community to recognize prominent individuals, groups, and organizations that help to shape what Long Beach represents. Although free, this parade draws in an enormous crowd every year, equating to immense traffic and insufficient parking, especially since police will close 2nd Street to traffic starting at 5pm. I always just park incredibly far away and just walk to Belmont Shore with friends, although I have seen groups bike there. Many people set up seats along the parade route, which encircles 2nd Street in both directions, quite early. Arrive too late and you may just barely catch the tail end of the parade with some visibility.

Returning to the parade this year, So Cal Corgi Nation will incorporate themselves into the parade as one of the marching participants. This organization normally hosts Corgi meet-ups at nearby dog beaches for Corgi owners and lovers to come and check out all the beloved companions. While they would normally have one of these meet-ups around this time of the year (following a quarterly schedule), due to the cold weather and other events taking place, it makes more sense to simply combine the meet-up into the parade, and thus the organization had combined into this parade.

Looking for something festive to do with friends and/or family this weekend? Bring them to Belmont Shore and check out the parade. It costs nothing to attend, just the agony of searching for parking or arriving early and waiting until then. But even if you do the latter, Belmont Shore has plenty of businesses and activities to keep you and your group occupied for quite some time. So if I do not see you at the parade this Saturday night, Happy Holidays to you and yours~
