Kicking off last week, Reel Big Fish started their new tour in celebration of their latest album release, Candy Coated Fury. Joined by Pilfers and Dan Potthast from MU330, Reel Big Fish started their tour in Southern California and plan to play shows across the United States before heading to Europe to resume their tour there. As a crowd favorite, fans of all ages showed up to their show, although it appeared that more younger people made a greater presence. All three acts have performed in the music industry for over a decade, but many of the young audience members may not have felt the energy of the opening acts. Regardless, the night still raged on with boundless energy on a cold winter night.

Dan Potthast from the band MU330 opened the night with his acoustic set. Rather than just play music, Dan openly engaged the audience, creating a musical comedy set. The more people heckled, the better his material got as his set progressed. One kid finally threw his hat onto the stage, so Dan put on the hat and played the last song about that kid, and hilarity ensued.

Up next, the Pilfers took the stage with their ska/reggae music. As an experienced band, they did everything right in terms of playing a show, delivering high-intensity music and beats. Sadly, because of a mostly younger crowd, many people did not receive the Pilfers too well, and some started getting restless waiting for Reel Big Fish. Kids these days…

At last, Reel Big Fish stormed onto the stage in a glorious triumphant entrance. Playing a mix of old and new, Reel Big Fish ensured that everyone in the audience would recognize one of their songs. From hits like “She Has A Girlfriend Now” and “Beer” to recent hits like “Sell Out,” Reel Big Fish covered their entire career span in this show. Just to dork around, they even covered “Tequila” and “Red Red Wine” to stall for the next song. Upon returning for an encore, Reel Big Fish closed out the night with their smashing cover of “Take On Me” by A-Ha.

Looking for some more ska action? The tour just completed all west coast locations, but all three acts will continue touring throughout the United States through mid February before Reel Big Fish ships off to Europe. Plenty of other great ska and/or punk rock music happens in Southern California, so stay tuned for upcoming shows!
