The Haute Dogs Bulldog Beauty Contest returned for its 13th annual iteration this past Sunday at Marine Stadium in Long Beach. Organized by Justin Rudd and operated by the Community Action Team, this beauty pageant for bulldogs celebrates the charm and cuteness of these precious pets. Completely free to attend, guests could see and play with over 500 bulldogs, some even from out of state. Pet owners wanting to enter their dog had to pay a one-time participation fee of $10, which allowed the pooches to enter any of over 20 categories of competitions. These competitions more resembled sweepstakes than anything, as the dogs did not have to do anything physically tough other than walk around the runway once. In addition to bulldogs, a few of the contests allowed other breeds to participate, such as pugs, chihuahuas, and pit bulls. Other generic categories included cutest, ugliest, senior dogs, best in show, mutts, small dogs, and large dogs. Albeit not everyone who brought their dog actually entered a contest, everybody surely enjoyed the company of the pups, especially kids, whom bulldogs love to play with. Any pet lover should have made an effort to attend this free gathering of pets.

Events like these help to remind us of the joys these wonderful animals bring to our lives. If you currently do not have a pet, considering adding one to your life. They make great companions, and do not cost as much as a child. Stay on the lookout for pet events in your area for opportunities to learn about pets, and possibly acquire one. Other notable events from this organizer include the Howl’oween Parade for all pets, and the Santa Paws operation, a charity event that occurs in December. Additionally, check out the So Cal Corgi Nation, an organization dedicated to corgis that routinely puts on events throughout the year.

The 13th Annual Bulldog Beauty Contest will take place this Sunday morning at Marine Stadium in the park at the north end. Over 500 dogs can compete in 19 different categories, most of which feature bulldogs, both English and French. Some categories will tailor specifically to other breeds, such as pugs, chihuahuas, and pit bulls. Other generic categories include cutest, ugliest, senior dogs, best in show, mutts, small dogs, and large dogs. Spectators can visit absolutely free, but for just $5, visitors may buy a seat along the runway to gain an up-close view as the dogs strut down the runway. For anyone wanting to enter their dog into the pageant, the organizers assess a $10 entry fee. The first contest begins at 9:45 am, and contests continue all the way to 3:00 pm. The main event, the English Bulldog pageant, begins at 10am, while French Bulldogs go on at noon. Various pet vendors will remain open to the public from 9:30 am until 3:00 pm. Some home breeders also bring their pups to sell to eager pet lovers!

For an event free to attend for the public, this makes for a nice Sunday morning getaway for you, your friends, and your family. If you do not currently have a pet, this event shows you the joys of having a furry companion in your life, and can pave the way towards having a pet of your own since this event has information about pet adoptions. In addition, some pet breeders may visit the event, so visitors can seek information from them as well. Come out to Long Beach this Sunday morning to see a bunch of cute pets for a feel-good time. Check out the Bulldog Beauty Contest on Facebook to keep up with their announcements and latest information. In the meantime, check out my photos from last year’s Bulldog Beauty Contest:

With the start of a new year, everybody and everything gets a chance at a fresh start. While people can have their resolutions, some entities, especially businesses, have to plan for the greater picture. Timing means a lot in business, so having the right products or services at the right times can make or break a business. When companies hold events, they must take care not to hold them at the same time as similar events, as those could take away potential customers. For the most part, unless an event organizer really drops the ball, the event runs its duration without any many hitches. If you want to see what Southern California has to offer, check out these five events going on this season.

5. Bock Fest & Cosplay Beer Fest

This year’s Bock Fest moves to a new location at the Biltmore Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles. A unique beer fest of its kind, this winter fest celebrates the tasty brews of wintertime in a premiere setting. Primarily brewed in cold seasons, bocks originate in Germany, where they love to brew beer full of flavor and alcohol while minimizing the alcoholic taste. These strong lagers appear darker than most beers, ranging from pale yellow like a pilsner to dark brown like a brown ale. Although this fest focuses on bocks and other German beers, many other microbrews will serve their amazing craft beers as well, such as Lagunitas, Fireman’s Brew, Weihenstephan, Affligem, and more. Local food businesses, such as Pink’s Hot Dogs, will serve food to those wanting to eat between or during beers. For $45 admission, attendees receive three hours of UNLIMITED beer pours starting at 2pm, plus a souvenir glass to take home. Upgrading to the $85 VIP admission allows entry an hour earlier, plus a souvenir glass. New this year, the organizers will include additional entertainment in the form of the Cosplay Beer Fest, encouraging people to dress up as fictional characters.

4. 5th Annual Mission Valley Craft Beer & Food Festival

Although this event technically takes place in the Spring and in San Diego County, I needed to include this as a significant event that all should look into. After taking a year off, the Mission Valley Craft Beer & Food Festival returns to San Diego at its new location of Qualcomm Stadium. This 21 & up event will feature numerous breweries serving up unlimited samples of their beers, and a handful of local chefs and restaurants serving their delicious creations. VIP admission costs $55, comes with a brew caddy, and allows entry at 12pm. General admission costs $35 and starts at 1:30pm. With free parking, local bands, and a vast area with plenty of seating, this fest has all grounds covered.

3. 12th Annual TheFitExpo Los Angeles

Experience everything related to fitness at the 12th Annual TheFitExpo Los Angeles. Taking place over the course of two days at the Los Angeles Convention Center, this massive expo showcases all forms of fitness and athletics with live competitions, demos, workshops, seminars, and more. Visitors can view various forms of fitness and non-arena sports, such as CrossFit, weightlifting, Zumba, Parkour, wrestling, (mixed) martial arts, and more. The massive expo hall contains enough vendors to fill multiple swap meets, but once visitors get past all the vendors, they will find the various demo areas strewn about the expo hall. Single day admission costs $25, while the weekend combo only costs $40. All attendees receive access the entire exhibit floor, competitions, seminars, demos, autograph sessions, free samples, and more.

2. 11th Annual Bulldog Beauty Contest

The 11th Annual Bulldog Beauty Contest will take place on the morning of Saturday, February 7 at Marine Stadium in the park at the north end. The first contest begins at 9:40 am, and contests continue all the way to 3:00 pm. The main event, the English Bulldog pageant, begins at 10am, while French Bulldogs go on at noon. Various pet vendors will remain open to the public from 9:30 am until 3:00 pm. Some home breeders also bring their pups to sell to eager pet lovers!

1. 2015 Long Beach Comic Expo

The 2015 Long Beach Comic Expo returns to the Long Beach Convention Center at the end of February, much in the year earlier than last year. Returning to Hall C and the foyer on the southwest side, hundreds of local comic book writers and artists will travel here to exhibit their merchandise, art, books, toys, and more. Eager fans can gain access to the entire show floor for $30 per person for Saturday, $20 on Sunday, or $45 for the entire weekend, effectively double the amount of last year. In addition to the expo on the show floor, various workshops and seminars will occur in the promenade meeting rooms for those who register ahead of time. Diehard fans will recognize the various celebrities sitting in for meet & greet and autograph sessions. Even to those not interested in comics, everyone should attend a comic expo/con just to see everyone dressing up in costume. At any expo involving comics, video games, anime, manga, and more, any attendee cannot avoid seeing another guest participating in the inevitable cosplay for the duration of the event. Cosplay has turned into a staple for any sort of expo in this industry, and the fans proudly don their best gear for this expo.
